The Clerk’s Report – September 2023

The peak of hurricane season is officially upon us. Collier County did not take a direct hit from Hurricane Idalia, but we need to remain vigilant throughout the season. Make sure to get your supplies ready and regularly check the news for hurricane warnings and updates. Always stay prepared!

September brings two very important days. Labor Day, the “unofficial end of summer,” brings football games, fall weather (hopefully) and pumpkin spice everything (my favorite!), where we recognize all of those who work every day to keep our country moving forward. The other date, September 11, is a very solemn event to commemorate and honor the lives we lost in the 9/11 attack on our country. We express our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who died and remember the sacrifice and service of so many. We also pay tribute to the responders who risked their lives while conducting rescue operations and their willingness to risk their lives for others. Several remembrances are scheduled around Collier County, and the public is invited to join, including the ceremony at the Golden Gate Government Center sponsored by the Golden Gate Civic Association.

At the start of the year, we released a series of articles and videos with a theme of ‘Moments in Collier County’s History’ as part of the year-round Centennial Celebration, which features interesting historical facts and trivia about Collier County. Over the summer, I had the great honor to interview Ms. Lila Zuck, the president and founder of Collier County Historical Research Center and a well-known historian extraordinaire! She has been a great help to our Centennial Committee during the research process for our centennial exhibit. Thank you, Ms. Lila, for sharing your wisdom and knowledge of Collier County! I also had the great pleasure to speak with Mrs. Valerie Wenzel Carson, daughter of the late County Commissioner Clifford Wenzel, about her father and her experiences growing up in Collier County in the ’60s and ’70s. Please take the opportunity to view their videos on our website.

Have a great September and Fall season!
